Foundation Book Fund

Female College Student Reading Book Photo

The Book Fund was established in 2002 in response to a growing need for assistance with the rising cost of textbooks. Since then, over $200,000 in book vouchers have been distributed to eligible students with financial needs.

  • Students nationally now spend an average of $900 per year on textbooks – or about half the average cost of tuition at 2-year colleges nationwide and 150 percent of the cost of community college enrollment fees in California.
  • A recent survey of U.S. college faculty confirms the conventional wisdom that next to the professor, the text is the most critical tool students have to ensure academic success.
“Thank you for helping me through my toughest times. Without help with my books, I wouldn’t have been able to stay in school.” – Ana Cedano, El Camino College Student

The Book Fund Honor Loan Program
Teaching Students How To Give Back

The Foundation is embarking on an exciting new initiative to enhance the Book Fund program. This new component will empower our students and add an additional dimension to their education – The Honor Loan Program.

Educating students goes beyond providing access and financial resources – it can also include empowering the students of our communities to help others as they have been helped. The Foundation Book Fund Honor Loan program provides textbook vouchers for students AND the opportunity to “give it back” within five years from the date of the voucher. This is completely voluntary and is not a contractual obligation. Rather it is a challenge to our students that helps educate them about philanthropy and the importance of helping others as they were helped.

“Despite all the technology we now have, there is no substitute for books when it comes to learning. Please join me in supporting the El Camino College Book Fund Honor Loan Program so that every student will have the books they need.” – Don Knabe, Supervisor, Los Angeles County
